Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre was built around the old Father Bauer Arena, which was a hockey arena that opened in October 1963. Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre was used in the Davis Cup in February 2012. In November 2012 it was announced that it will again be used in February 2013 when Canada take on Spain for the Davis Cup.

Coming in 2014, it will host the  Special Olympics Canada Summer Games which will take place from July 8 to 12. They will feature athletes competing in 11 sports that have intellectual disabilities from all over Canada.
