Venus Williams Defeated in Australian Open First Round

Venus Williams was defeated in round one of the Australian Open by No. 22 seed Ekaterina Makarova of Russia.
Venus was not seeded in the first round and is No. 37 in the world rankings. She has won seven Grand Slam singles trophies in her career.

Williams says this about the match: “I was hitting the ball well this week, and obviously it was disappointing to not win the first round. Losing any match is never any fun, especially in a major.”

Li Na of China defeated Ana Konjuh of Croatia while Petra Kvitova was beaten by Thailand’s Luksika Kumkhum.
In the men’s first round Sam Querrey of America beat Santiago Giraldo of Colombia and Spain’s David Ferrer defeated Alejandro Gonzalez of Colombia.

Other interesting matches were Stanislas Wawrinka winning against Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan after quitting. Czech Republic’s Tomas Berdych ousted Aleksandr Nedovyesov while Jerzy Janowicz advanced by winning against Jordan Thompson of Australia. America’s Madison Keys won against Austria’s Patricia Mayr-Achleitner and Elena Vesnina of Russia was upset by Alison Riske. Germany’s Julia Goerges lost to seventh seed Sara Errani.
