Mervyn Rose was born in New South Wales, Australia in 1930. He was an integral member of Australia’s 1951, 1952, and 1957 Davis Cup team victories. In his home country, he captured the 1954 Australian singles championship. In 1958 Rose won the French and Italian singles titles. He also won four career doubles titles in Grand Slam events, including the 1952 US doubles championship. That year, Rose and American partner Vic Seixas (Class of 1971), stopped fellow Australian Hall of Fame Enshrinees Ken McGregor (Class of 1999) and Frank Sedgman’s (Class of 1979) bid for a second consecutive doubles Grand Slam. In the 1950′s Rose was ranked five times in the world’s Top Ten (1953, ’54, ’55, ’57, ’58). After retiring from competitive play, Rose turned to coaching. He has worked with the Italian Davis Cup Team and traveling teams from Australia, New Zealand and England. He has coached Margaret Court, Kerry Harris, Richard Fromberg, Ian Fletcher, Magdelina Grzybowska, Billie Jean King, and most recently, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario.
