Ernest Renshaw was the older of the fabled English Renshaw twins by 15 minutes, and he was a half-inch taller at 5-foot-101/2. He wasn’t, however, as successful in amassing singles titles as brother Willie. The two of them ushered in an attacking era and together were an awesome pair at doubles, winning Wimbledon between 1880 and 1889, a record surpassed by one by the Doherty brothers, Laurie and Reggie.
Ernest, who made the singles title round five times, won in 1888, and might have done better if brother hadn’t been in the way, losing the prize to Willie thrice 1882, 1883 and 1889, and to Herbert Lawford in 1887. Like the Dohertys, the Renshaws were miserable playing against one another. A right-hander, Ernest was born January 3, 1861, in Leamington, England, and died September 2,1899 in Twyford, England. He entered the Hall 1983.
