Theodore Roosevelt Pell made his mark inside, winning the U.S. Indoor singles in 1907, 1909 and 1911, and the doubles four times between 1905 and 1912. A right-hander, he had a partiularly strong backhand, and was ranked in the U.S. Top Ten five times between 1910 and 1918, No. 5 in 1913 and 1915. Pell, a slender 6-foot New Yorker, did have a good time outdoors in 1915 though, in a run to the U.S. semis at Newport, beating two fellow Hall-of-Famers-to-be in straight sets, Watson Washburn and Beals Wright, on the way. But the “Comet” fell on him Maurice McLoughlin, 6-2, 6-0, 7-5.

Born in New York, May 12, 1879, he died August 18, 1967, in Sands Point, NY. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1966.
