Known for televisions “Nielsen Ratings”

Arthur Charles Nielsen’s name is synonymous with television–the Nielsen Ratings–but he was long an avid player and a generous patron, contributing much time and construction of tennis courts. One such monument to his memory is the Nielsen Center at his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin, where he was captain of the tennis varsity three years, 1916-18.

He continued playing after graduation, teaming with Arthur Nielsen, Jr., to win the U.S. Father and Son doubles titles of 1946 and 1948, and he was good enough to play singles in the U.S. Championships of 1918. A Chicagoan, he was born there, September 5, 1897, and died there, June 1, 1980. He entered the Hall of Fame in 1971.
