A distinguished figure in finance and government when Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board for 20 years (1951-70), William McChesney Martin was long devoted to the game, working behind the scenes to improve its condition in such positions as president of the National Tennis Foundation and the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
In 1992, he was elected honorary chairman of the Hall, and worked diligently to make sure that its home, the historic Newport Casino (imperiled by age and apathy), was preserved and put into fine condition.
Martin married into an honored tennis family, wedding Cynthia Davis, daughter of Dwight Davis, donor of the Cup bearing his name. Like the Davises, he was raised in St. Louis, born there December 17, 1906. He entered the Hall of Fame in 1982 and resides in Washington, D.C.
