Frederick Howard Hovey, a Bostonian and Harvardian, won the U.S. Intercollegiate singles in 1890 and 1891 as well as the doubles with Bob Wrenn the second year. Four years later he, a 5-foot-8, 170-pound right-hander, beat lefty Wrenn, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4, to end his fellow Bostonian’s two-year reign at the U.S. Championships. Wrenn returned the favor the next year, 1896, 6-1 in the fifth set of the challenge round.
Between 1890 and 1896 he was in the U.S. Top Ten seven times, No. 1 in 1895. In 1893 he and Clarence Hobart, twice U.S. champs in doubles, won the championship of the World Columbian Exposition at Chicago. He was born October 7, 1868 in Newton Centre, MA, and died October 18, 1945 in Miami Beach. He entered the Hall of Fame in 1974.
