Great Britain Beats USA Team in 1st Round of The Davis Cup

The Great Britain team consisting of Andy Murray, James Ward, Dominic Inglot and Colin Fleming with team captain
Leon Smith has beaten the USA Team in the 1st round of the Davis Cup. The USA team with team members Sam Querrey, Bob and Mike Bryan and Donald Young with captain Jim Courier fell behind on Friday with 0-2. The USA team has only come back in that deficit in one in 39 ties. The Great Britain team will now go to Italy for the April Quarterfinals.

Team captain Smith says this of the win “Obviously, the whole team is delighted, not because we beat the US team, but just because of where we’re at right now. Seems a little bit surreal.” Smith said. “It’s funny to think that Andy wasn’t even born the last time we won a World Group (tie) and here he is stealing it for us. It’s brilliant.”

Team USA will have to play in Septembers World Group play off to continue for the Davis Cup crown in 2015. Other nations going into September to play are Spain, Canada, Argentina, Australia and Serbia.

“We’re disappointed,” US captain Jim Courier said. “We don’t like to see our season end in February, but it is what it is. We’ll put it behind us. Hopefully the guys will put together a good season on the ATP circuit and build towards our qualifying match in September and we’ll keep or place in the World Group and get a shot at the title again next year.”
