A Yale man who won the U.S. Intercollegiate doubles in 1919, Charles Stedman Garland joined a Harvardian, Dick Williams, the following year to beat Algernon Kingscote and James Parke, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-2, and become the first Americans win the doubles at Wimbledon.
Ranked three times in the U.S. Top Ten, 1918, 1919 and 1920 (No. 8 each time), he was selected for the Hall of Fame in 1969 as much for his service to the USTA as committeeman as player. One of his duties was captaining the 1927 Davis Cup team. Garland, a 5-foot-7-1/2 right-hander, was born October 29, 1898, in Pittsburgh. He later lived in Baltimore and died there January 28, 1971.
