Tall and athletic, Charlotte “Lottie” Dod became the youngest of major champions at 15 by winning Wimbledon in 1887, off the defending champion, Blanche 6-, 6-0, in the challenge round. She played four other years, never lost–in 10 matches she dropped one set–though her championship time, now Mrs. Hillyard, did give her a 6-8, 6-1, 6-4, in the 1893 final. She also won the Irish title in 1887, was exceptional at archery (an Olympic silver medalist in 1908), field hockey and golf. She represented Britain in international hockey in 1889 and 1890 and won the British Ladies Golf Championship in 1904 at Troon, defeating May Hezlet in the final, 1-up. She won 10 of 12 matches at Wimbledon. Born September 24, 1871, in Lower Bebington, England, she died June 27, 1960, in Sway, England. She entered the Hall of Fame in 1983.
