As early as 1959, Herman David put forth he proposal of “Open” tennis to the Lawn Tennis Association. Throughout his career as chair of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, David remained a staunch advocate of the concept of “Open” tennis. In 1967 announced that in 1968, the All England Lawn Tennis Championships would be open to all categories of players (amateurs and professionals), with full backing of the Club committee.
