A Rhode Islander born in Valley Falls on March 12, 1875, beanpole Malcolm Greene Chace, 6-foot-l, 150 pounds, made his first mark in the game by winning the U.S. Interscholastic title in 1892 for University Grammar in Providence. In 1893 (for Brown) and 1894 and 1895 (for Yale), he became the only three-straight winner of both the U.S. Intercollegiate singles and doubles titles, the only man to win both for two different colleges. He was a semifinalist at the U.S. Championships in 1894, losing to Bill Larned and won the doubles title in 1895 with Robert Wrenn. Right-handed, he ranked in the U.S. Ten four times, beginning in 1892, No. 3 in 1895. He died July 16, 1955 in Yarmouth, MA, was named to the Hall of Fame in 1961.
