FRIBOURG, Switzerland (AP)—Roger Federer will face John Isner in the second singles match Friday when Switzerland takes on the United States in the first round of the Davis Cup.

Eighth-ranked Mardy Fish will open for the U.S. against No. 28 Stanislas Wawrinka on the indoor clay courts at 7,000-capacity Fribourg Forum.

Isner has lost both matches against the third-ranked Federer, each time on hard courts, and said he aims to serve well and play quick points.

“I don’t want to be getting in 15-ball rallies with Roger from the baseline ‘cause that probably won’t bode well for me,” the 17th-ranked Isner said. “I’m going to need to play aggressive, play-first strike tennis and see how it goes.”

Fish, who has a 2-0 career record against Wawrinka, is satisfied to be opening the series.

“I would prefer to play first. On a team note, I would like to try to get the team off to a good start,” Fish said.

U.S. captain Jim Courier plans to have 19-year-old Ryan Harrison make his Davis Cup debut on Saturday, partnering with Mike Bryan in doubles against Federer and Wawrinka, who won Olympic gold in doubles in Beijing.

Still, that could change depending how deep Fish and Isner go in their singles matches.

“We’ll see as we go,” Courier said. “That’s the team we are nominating now, but certainly things can change given whatever happens (Friday).”

Bryan’s twin brother, Bob, is unavailable after his first child was born last week.

In Sunday’s scheduled reverse singles, the third-ranked Federer is set to face Fish, followed by Wawrinka against Isner.

The U.S. has a 2-1 edge against Switzerland in Davis Cup matchups, though each series went to the home team on hard courts.

The Americans’ dream team of Courier, Andre Aggasi, John McEnroe and Pete Sampras won the 1992 final played at Fort Worth, Texas, and a first-round series when Federer was unavailable in 2009 at Birmingham, Alabama.

A 19-year-old Federer led the Swiss to victory in a 2001 first-round match in his home city Basel.

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP)—Fernando Gonzalez of Chile is set to retire after the Masters tournament next month in Florida.

The 31-year-old Gonzalez, who reached No. 5 in the ATP rankings, made the announcement at an emotional news conference on Thursday.

He said he no longer had the energy to play at the top level after having been bothered by back, knee and hip injuries for several years.

Gonzalez won 11 ATP events and the three Olympic medals—gold, silver and bronze.

He reached the final of the 2007 Australian Open, losing in straight sets to Roger Fedrerer. He was also a semifinalist at the 2009 French Open and reached the quarterfinals twice in the U.S. Open and once at Wimbledon.

Gonzalez, who returned last year after being out for eight months following hip surgery, said he had gone through some “tough times” in recent months.

“I realized that I didn’t have the energy that I needed, nor am I prepared to do all I need to in order to be where I want to be,” Gonzalez said. “Given the respect tennis deserves, I have decided to step aside. Tennis has given me some incredible experiences, and I’ve met many admirable, wonderful people.”

Jose Hinzpeter, president of the Chilean tennis federation, was in shock at the decision.

“We thought we’d be able to count on him for a bit more,” Hinzpeter said.

MADRID (AP)—The Spanish government is considering legal action against a French TV station that poked fun at alleged ties to doping by athletes.

Some of Spain’s most famous athletes came out in defense of their achievements on Thursday. That’s a day after the Spanish tennis federation announced plans to sue Canal Plus for a video skit that used its logo and made fun of Rafael Nadal and other athletes.

Jose Ignacio Wert, the minister for Education, Culture and Sport, called Canal Plus “intolerable” and “unsportsmanlike” for the satirical suggestion that Spanish athletes “don’t win by chance.”

After the Nadal skit on Monday, two more skits by Les Guignols (The Puppets) satirical program were released Wednesday. They took aim at recently banned Tour de France champion Alberto Contador, Spain’s World Cup-winning soccer team and its European Championship-winning basketball squad.

Nadal, a six-time French Open champion, has been the butt of Les Guignols’ jokes, appearing in two of the three clips. Last week, Contador received a two-year ban from the Court of Arbitration for a positive doping test he blamed on contaminated meat.

The latest video shows Spanish athletes signing a petition in support of Contador but using needles rather than pens, including Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas, an unidentified basketball player and Nadal.

“It’s not against me but against Spain in general,” Nadal told reporters Thursday during practice at his home island of Mallorca. “With less, we’ve achieved more than they have, we’re doing something better. It’s not about pills or syringes.”

The videos have drawn much publicity in Spain, with many media outlets countering with reports suggesting France is jealous of the country’s achievements.

“It’s an indiscriminate attack on Spanish sport that is completely false and doesn’t correspond with reality,” Wert said. “Several federations have already undertaken means of protest and the CSD is now studying it.”

Spain’s soccer team is the world and European champions, while Nadal holds 10 Grand Slams titles and helped the Davis Cup team to three titles since 2008.

Bernard Hinault was the last Frenchman to win the Tour in 1985, with Spanish cyclists winning 10 times since. Spanish tennis players have won 11 titles at Roland Garros since Yannick Noah’s victory in 1983, the last for a Frenchman.

“It’s in fashion to discredit champions with this theme of doping,” said Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, a member of Spain’s World Cup winning team. “To shut them up, we just have to keep winning.”

Spain has often been accused of protecting its own in the face of doping charges, especially since the 2006 probe Operation Puerto, the biggest investigation into doping in cycling. That case implicated more than 50 cyclists. On Thursday, 1997 Tour champion Jan Ullrich was banned for two years for his involvement.

Contador, who is one of only five cyclists to have won all three of cycling’s premier races, also was implicated in the case.

Wert said Spain was pushing through legislation to make sure anti-doping laws live up to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s code. Madrid looks to bid for the 2020 Olympics.

Spanish Olympic Committee president and Madrid 2020 bid leader Alejandro Blanco said changes need to be made to WADA’s doping code after Contador was banned for testing positive for a minuscule amount of clenbuterol on a 2010 Tour rest day.

“I would support a change in the anti-doping rules. One day they will set a barrier for clenbuterol and then from there down it won’t be considered doping,” Blanco said. “No one can accuse us of not being front and center in the fight against doping.”

Notable tennis administrator Mike Davies, who currently serves as CEO of the New Haven Open, has been elected to the International Tennis Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2012 in the contributor’s category.

Davies has had a 40-plus year career in tennis promotion and administration, which began after he retired as a player when he took the role of executive director of the WCT, a men’s tour prior to the ATP. Davies helped organize the first major network broadcast of a tournament, was the first person to incorporate the tiebreaker into a pro circuit, introduced colored clothing on players and colored tennis balls, and introduced the then-rule of 30 seconds between points and 90 seconds between games.

In 1981, Davies moved on to serve as the executive director for the ATP, and served as general manager of the International Tennis Federation.

"I am on the list of the participants [for Belgrade], but it will be difficult to organize everything,” he told the Beta news agency.
