Doha, Qatar (November 9): Venus Williams defeated Vera Zvonareva to capture the first Sony Ericsson Championships of her career. Both players enjoyed perfect 3-0 records in the round robin stage of the event; Williams had beaten World No.1 Jelena Jankovic in the semis, while Zvonareva’s victim was Elena Dementieva.

Quebec City, Canada (November 2): Russia’s Nadia Petrova secured her second singles title of the year at the Bell Challenge. In doing so, she earned enough points to qualify as second alternate for the Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha the following week.

Luxembourg, Luxembourg (October 26): Elenia Dementieva won her third title of 2008 at the Fortis Championships Luxembourg, defeating Danish teen Caroline Wozniacki in a grueling three set final.

Linz, Austria (October 26): After a difficult summer and autumn, Ana Ivanonic finally had something to smile about when she beat Vera Zvonareva to win the Generali Ladies Linz.

Zurich, Switzerland (October 19): Venus Williams collected her second title of 2008 at the Tennis.com Zurich Open, which was being staged for the last time. In the final Williams defeated her nemesis Flavia Pennetta, who had beaten the American on two previous occasions during the season. Pennetta upset world No.1 Jelena Jankovic in the second round.

Moscow, Russia (October 12): World No.1 Jelena Jankovic won her third title in a row at the Kremlin Cup, beating local Muscovite Vera Zvonareva in the final.

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (October 5): Romania’s Sorana Cirstea, 18, won her first Tour title at the Tashkent Open. Her finals victim was fellow teen Sabine Lisicki of Germany, who held match point at one stage. 

Tokyo, Japan (October 5): Despite dropping the secondset in the final against Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi, Caroline Wozniacki won the third Tour title of her career at the AIG Japan Open.

Stuttgart, Germany (October 5): Jelena Jankovic won her second title in as many weeks at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, beating Nadia Petrova in the final in straight sets. The win, coupled with Serena Williams’ second round loss to Li Na, was enough to restore the Serb to the No.1 ranking for a second career week.

Seoul, Korea (September 28): Russia’s Maria Kirilenko won a third title for 2008 at the Hansol Korea Open, recovering a first set deficit against Australia’s Samantha Stosur in the final.
