Both players enjoyed perfect 3-0 records in the round robin stage of the event; Williams had beaten World No.1 Jelena Jankovic in the semis, while Zvonareva’s victim was Elena Dementieva.

Zurich, Switzerland (October 19): Venus Williams collected her second title of 2008 at the Tennis.com Zurich Open, which was being staged for the last time. In the final Williams defeated her nemesis Flavia Pennetta, who had beaten the American on two previous occasions during the season. Pennetta upset world No.1 Jelena Jankovic in the second round.
