Juliette Paxton Atkinson, a right-handed 5-footer who lived in Brooklyn, NY, was prominent in singles for four years at the U.S. Championships, a finalist, 1895-98, winning the title thrice: 1895, 1897 and 1898. She did not defend in l899, defaulting the challenge round to Calfornian Marion Jones, who gave her a terrific struggle for the ’98 title, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5–one of the longest matches in terms of games (51) ever played by women. But she did continue to compete through 1902.

She won the U.S. doubles seven times with five different partners between 1894 and 1901 She had five in a row with three partner (1894-98), the last two with her younger sister, Kathleen. Other than the Roosevelts, Ellen and Grace in 1900, they were the only sisters to win the title. They were the first sisters to face one another in the Championships, Juliette winning semifinals in 1895, 6-1, 6-4, and 1897, 6-1, 6-3. She was born April 15, 1873, in Rahway, NJ died January 12, 1944, in Lawrenceville, IL, and entered the Hall of Fame in 1974.
